Edenton is a town in Chowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,966 at the 2008 census. It is the county seat of Chowan County. Edenton is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. In recent years Edenton has become a popular retirement location and a destination for heritage tourism. It is the location of many bed and breakfast inns.
Edenton was incorporated by English colonists in 1722. It served as the capital of North Carolina from 1722 to 1743, with the governor's establishing residence in the town and the population's increasing.
In 1774, in response to the Tea Act, 51 women in Edenton signed a protest petition agreeing to boycott British tea and other products, in what became known as the Edenton Tea Party. The Party was one of the first political actions by women in the colonies.
Supreme Court Justice James Wilson (signer of the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution) died in Edenton on August 21, 1798 at age 55, while riding his Judicial Circuit.
During the American Civil War, the Albemarle Artillery was recruited in 1862 at Edenton by local attorney William Badham, Jr.. After cannon were recast from bronze donated as bells from courthouses and churches in the Edenton area to arm the battery, the unit was renamed the Edenton Bell Battery after their named guns, Columbia, St. Paul, Fannie Roulac, and Edenton. Two of the guns, long thought lost, have been returned to Edenton in recent years. The St. Paul and theEdenton now can be seen on display at Edenton's waterfront park.
Edenton is home to the Edenton Steamers of the Coastal Plain League, a collegiate summer baseball league. The Steamers play at Historic Hicks Field in Edenton. The Steamers began play in 1998.
